Norway Savings Bank has renewed its longtime support of Partners for World Health with a $1,500 donation.
Partners for World Health is a Portland nonprofit that collects and donates unused medical supplies and equipment, assisting health care providers and patients from Uganda to Ukraine and including in Maine. Since the organization's founding in 2009, it has been dedicated to improving health care and reducing its environmental impact.
“From the start, we operated on the simple premise of local effort, global impact,” said Elizabeth McLellan, CEO and founder of Partners for World Health. She was honored as a Mainebiz Woman to Watch in 2020.
“We believe challenges are opportunities for action,” she continued. “We collect medical supplies and equipment from health care facilities, manufacturers, and others and evaluate and repackage them, preparing these supplies and equipment for distribution to individuals, communities, and healthcare facilities in need. In the process, we are diverting materials from landfills, lowering healthcare costs, and providing resources to people in need.”
The organization has helped thousands of people in need and shipped over $35 million in supplies and medical equipment to areas in need around the world. In the process, over 5 million pounds of medical supplies have been collected, repackaged and distributed to hospitals instead of landfills.
The idea for Partners for Rural Health began when McLellan was working as a nurse administrator at a trauma center in Saudi Arabia. During a visit to Pakistan, she observed a hospital that lacked even basic supplies or sinks.
“Watching the growth of this wonderful organization and the commitment it has to its ideals and mission has been overwhelming and heartwarming,” said Dan Walsh, president and CEO of Norway Savings Bank. “Each year, they increase the number of lives saved, medical supplies delivered, environmental impact initiatives, and training programs and events for people in Maine and across the world.”
Norway Savings Bank ranked No. 7 among the largest Maine-based banks, based on assets of $1.83 billion on June 30, 2023, according to the 2024 Mainebiz Book of Lists.
