Obama names Mills to head SBA

President-elect Barack Obama this afternoon nominated Karen Gordon Mills as national director of the Small Business Administration.

Mills, a member of Obama's transition team, is a founding partner of Solera Capital in New York City, president of MMP Group in Brunswick and chairs the Governor's Council on Competitiveness and the Economy. Her husband, Barry Mills, is president of Bowdoin College. A Harvard graduate, Mills served as the director of companies like Annie's Homegrown and Scotts Miracle Gro. She was nominated for the position by Sen. Olympia Snowe, according to the senator's office. "With Karen Mills at the helm," Obama said at a press conference announcing the nomination, "America's small businesses will have a partner in Washington to create jobs and spur growth."

"As a venture capitalist and entrepreneur, Karen combines real world experience with a dedication to public service. She is a national voice in the discussion of U.S. competitiveness, entrepreneurship and innovation," Gov. John Baldacci said in a statement. "Karen will be a strong voice for small businesses in Maine and around the country."
