The suspended leaders of Bath Iron Works' largest union are pushing for a jury trial for their lawsuit against the union's parent organization.
The four suspended leaders of Local S6 last May filed a lawsuit against the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, claiming the parent union's takeover of the local branch last March was defamatory and politically motivated. The Local S6 leaders -- President Mike Keenan, former Vice President Troy Osgood, Chief Bath Steward Mike Cyr and trustee Cathy London -- are opposing the IAMAW's request to have the case settled early by a judge and are instead calling for a jury trial, according to The Times Record. A lawyer for the group told the paper that the international union's request for a judge settlement is an attempt to keep "everyday Maine people" from deciding on the case. Both parties are still awaiting rulings on their requests. The IAMAW took control over the local union last year in the face of allegations of financial mismanagement, among others.
Keenan, Cyr and London are also waiting to hear from an internal committee on whether the allegations warrant any kind of punitive action.
