Paper cos. lob charges at Asia

Three paper companies, including two with mills in Maine, filed petitions with federal agencies charging China and Indonesia with unfair trade practices.

The petitions, filed by NewPage Corp., Sappi Fine Paper North America and Appleton Coated LLC, along with the United Steelworkers, with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission, accuse the Asian countries with dumping coated paper into the U.S. market and benefiting from unfair government subsidies, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The petitions estimate imports of coated paper from China and Indonesia have jumped 40% in the first six months of 2009, while domestic coated paper shipments have dropped by about 38%, according to the news report. The petitions seek a finding from the federal agencies that could lead to volume reductions of imports or price increases.

Miamisburg, Ohio-based NewPage has a mill in Rumford and employs roughly 1,000 workers, while Sappi Fine Paper North America, a division of Sappi Ltd. based in Johannesburg, South Africa, operates mills in Westbrook and Skowhegan.
