The city of Portland recently cut the ribbon for Mavodones Landing, the first significant expansion of public access to Portland Harbor in 30 years.

The Captain Nicholas M. Mavodones Jr. Landing was named by resolution of the city council n 2021 for one of the city’s longest serving council members and a contributor to the maritime vitality of Casco Bay.

Mavodones, who served as a Portland City Council member for 24 years and served on the Portland Board of Education for six years, had a long tenure on staff at Casco Bay Lines, starting as a deckhand, working as a captain and eventually operations manager.

The landing is adjacent to the Ocean Gateway Visitor Center.

The landing is expected to help address a shortage of dock space available for public transient docking; and to provide greater space and access to water taxis and other marine transit, and to recreational uses.

It’s located at the water’s edge in Amethyst Park, adjacent to the Ocean Gateway Visitor Center.
