After 10 years at the helm of Portland law firm Drummond Woodsum, Benjamin E. Marcus is stepping down from the role of managing director but will continue his practice there as an attorney.
The firm announced Thursday that Marcus will be succeeded by longtime shareholder George T. (Toby) Dilworth.
The transition comes after the growing firm moved up three places to No. 2 in the Mainebiz ranking of Maine's largest law firms, trailing only Bernstein Shur. Under Marcus's leadership, Drummond Woodsum has doubled in size and now has more than 100 lawyers in Maine, New Hampshire and Arizona, according to the firm.
"There are a number of practice areas that are very busy and expanding in terms of work and personnel," Marcus told Mainebiz in November. "It's not just one." At the time, he mentioned the firm's practice are in regulated substances, government relations and campaigns and its nationally recognized tribal practice group.
He also said that litigators from last year's merger with Portland's Germani Hill & Hayes have been a great addition, and that he expects the firm's growth to continue.
Marcus directed the firm’s expansion into new practice areas as well as growth in existing areas, according to the firm.
Drummond Woodsum said that Marcus will return to the full-time practice of law, representing clients throughout North America in complex commercial arrangements, including corporate restructurings in both formal and informal insolvency proceedings, creditors rights, equity and asset transactions on the buy and sell side, joint venture and development agreements and contract preparation and review.
The firm said that Dilworth is an experienced litigator, representing individuals and businesses in criminal and civil cases. While he served as a federal prosecutor, he received the U.S. Department of Justice’s Director’s Award for sustained superior performance.
Since returning to private practice, he has also received numerous professional awards for litigation and white-collar criminal defense.
