Portland Shellfish issues recall

The Portland Shellfish Co. has issued a voluntary recall of some brands of its cooked, ready-to-eat fresh and frozen lobster meat sold across the country.

The company requested the recall because some of its lobster meat products could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, the Associated Press reported.

The affected brands, which were distributed nationwide in wholesale and retail stores in various sizes and lots, include: Portland Shellfish Co., Claw Island, Craig's All Natural and Inland Ocean cooked, fresh or frozen lobster claw and knuckle meat, Portland television news station WCSH-6 reported.
