Portland terminal could have new life

Portland's International Marine Terminal, which has sat idle since last summer, could have a new operator.

The Maine Port Authority has sent the city a draft lease that would allow it to manage the terminal for a portion of the revenue from the business it generates, according to the Portland Press Herald. The city approached the port authority last year about managing the terminal, closed since New Jersey-based Columbia Coastal Transport pulled out last summer after it lost its largest customer. The port authority said it will spend as much as $5 million on improvements to the facility over the next several years, the paper reported.

The port authority said it sees opportunities for the terminal to handle project cargo, such as turbines for wind farms in the region, according to the Press Herald. The Portland City Council will review the draft lease in March.
