The city of Portland is reformatting it annual property tax bills and sending this fall's bill out later in an effort to streamline the process.
Beginning with the upcoming taxes for the 2020 fiscal year, Portland property owners will receive a single tax bill with two payment coupons, rather than getting two semiannual bills. The city website has also been updated to make tax information publicly available and allow online payment. Click here for more information.
“In previous fiscal years the City incurred significant additional staff, supplies, and postage cost by mailing two separate bills semiannually,” Portland officials said in a news release Monday.
Because of the transition to the new bills, Portland will be mailing them in early September rather than this month, according to the release. The schedule for the first payment will be adjusted accordingly, with payment not due until Oct. 18 instead of the usual mid-September deadline. The deadline for the second payment is March 20, 2020.
Details about the changes will be included in the September tax mailing.
In July, Portland began a revaluation of all commercial real property, in preparation for new tax assessments to be made in the 2021 fiscal year. The city contracted with Tyler Technologies (NYSE: TYL), a Texas-based government software vendor with four Maine offices, to assist in that process.
Tyler mailed requests for income and expense data to owners of commercial, industrial and apartment properties. That information was due Aug. 16.
