Prime Tanning cuts jobs

Prime Tanning Co. in Hartland laid off 10 to 12 workers this week, approximately four months after the company's Berwick facility ceased operations.

The cuts were made in response to slowing demand, Paul Larochelle, vice president of operations for the tannery, told Mainebiz this morning. The company consolidated operations to Hartland after closing the Berwick leather finishing facility in September, at which time the company laid off approximately 150 workers. The U.S. Department of Labor said Wednesday that those 150 workers affected by the shutdown are slated to receive a $528,722 grant for training and employment services. In Hartland, payrolls have more than doubled since last November, reaching a peak of about 230 this past October, Larochelle said.

In related news, Prime Tanning is working to pay the town of Hartland $101,000 in late taxes that were due Nov. 1, the Morning Sentinel reported.
