Racial discrimination suit settled with egg farms

The owner of the former DeCoster Egg Farms has reached an agreement with a former worker who accused the employer of racial discrimination.

The Portland Press Herald reported that Austin “Jack” DeCoster and Homero Ramirez reached an undisclosed settlement this week. Ramirez, a plant manager, claimed that he was asked to hire only Mexican workers because DeCoster said they were more obedient.

Ramirez also alleged he was required to do humiliating tasks while other employees watched, to show his employer’s authority.

DeCoster owned egg farms in Turner and Winthrop that he closed in 2011, along with his egg operations in Iowa that were linked to a nationwide salmonella outbreak.
