Realtors had a chance to learn about numerous sustainability topics — building science, new building materials, how systems such as heat pumps and solar panels work, and how to finance everything — during the second annual Realtor Green Day hosted earlier this month by the Greater Portland Board of Realtors’ sustainability advisory group.
The group was created in 2019, after the National Association of Realtors launched its own to advise the board on sustainability. The group is composed of Realtor members who are passionate about sustainability and want to make a difference.
“Realtors are playing a role in helping building owners save money on energy bills, which is the only variable housing cost most people have,” said Julia Bassett Schwerin, the group’s co-chair. “As a bonus, they will have healthier indoor air quality and will lower the carbon footprint of the building sector.”
Educating Realtors helps to educate their clients. Specifics of the topics included weatherization of the building envelope with air sealing and insulation, replacing combustion appliances with super-efficient electric heat pumps and light bulbs with LEDs, and getting rooftop or community solar panels to get the sun to power everything.
