The Maine state ethics commission might fine the Maine Association of Realtors' political action committee $10,000.
The staff of the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices has recommended the commission levy the maximum penalty because the Realtors' PAC reported spending late, which the commission says may have influenced the outcome of two close races, according to the Sun Journal. The PAC spent $3,000 each to mail postcards in support of Republican state Senate candidates Lois Snowe-Mello of Poland and Christopher Rector of Thomaston three weeks before the election. The PAC was required to report those expenditures within 24 hours to allow opposing candidates to receive clean-election matching funds. The report, however, was submitted 20 days later, four days before the election.
Snowe-Mello lost her race in Senate district 15, but Rector won against Democratic candidate David Miramant by less than 2,000 votes, the paper reported. The commission will decide next Monday whether to approve the fine.
