Rent-a-Husband founder files lawsuit

A month after criminal charges against him were dropped, Rent-a-Husband founder Kaile Warren has filed a lawsuit against two Portland law firms and a national hardware store chain.

Warren yesterday filed a civil suit in Cumberland County Superior Court against Preti Flaherty and Marcus, Clegg & Mistretta, claiming advice from his former attorneys led him to unintentionally mislead investors, according to the Portland Press Herald. He is seeking $200 million plus punitive damages from the law firms. Last month, the Maine Attorney General's Office dropped charges of securities fraud and theft by deception in a consent agreement that ordered Warren to repay investors $2 million. At that time, Warren said he planned to sue the law firms as well as Ace Hardware Corp., with which he collaborated on a business venture that fell through in 2008, in order to repay investors.

In the suit, Warren said the criminal charges negatively affected his "emerging media career" and his business, and claimed the damages represented revenues he could have earned. Both law firms have refuted Warren's claims that their legal guidance was to blame for his charges.
