Report calls for land conservation

A council created by Governor John Baldacci to study Maine's marketability yesterday released a report that concludes Maine's surroundings are pivotal to its economic success.

The Governor's Council on Maine's Quality of Place council have been preparing the "People, Place and Prosperity" report, inspired by the Brookings Institution report issued last year, for the past nine months. Among its recommendations, the report suggests an increase in the state's lodging tax and increased state borrowing could support economic development. It also recommends expanding the Land for Maine's Future program, offering tax incentives for historic preservation and even building a state-wide trail system linking major centers.

"As the rest of the country becomes more crowded and homogenous and polluted, what sets Maine apart ... becomes an ever more important economic asset," the report says.
