Four former staffers of John Richardson's campaign for governor have been criminally charged for falsifying documents related to Clean Election contributions.
The Maine Attorney General's Office yesterday filed complaints against the four staff members, charging them with multiple counts of unsworn falsification, a misdemeanor, according to the Portland Press Herald. The staffers -- William Moore of Brunswick, Denise Altvater of Perry, Lori A. Levesque of Fort Kent and Joseph Pickering of South Portland -- are charged with falsifying forms submitted by voters along with $5 Clean Election contributions. Moore, who faces six counts, told the paper he made "an honest mistake" in allowing a friend to collect contributions and then signing off on the forms. State law requires contributions to be made in a campaign worker's presence. "The Clean Elections process with regard to this form is flawed," Moore told the paper, adding that he intends to fight the charges.
Richardson dropped out of the race in April after the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices denied his application for public funding, saying he did not submit the required 3,250 valid signed forms from voters contributing $5 to the campaign, and that several campaign workers had violated rules in collecting donations.
