Tank painting project seeks matching funds

An effort to transform 16 oil storage tanks on Portland's harbor into works of public art has just received an anonymous donation of $100,000 -- with one major string attached. The donor behind the grant requires that organizers raise another $100,000 in matching funds by the end of the month in order to cash in.

Launched in 2008 by the Maine Center for Creativity, the "Art All Around" effort solicited London artist Jaime Gili to paint the tanks at the Sprague Energy site in South Portland following an international design competition. Two tanks have been painted and a third is now under way, according to Jean Maginnis, executive director of the center. When the fourth tank is complete, the project will rank as the largest public art painting in the world, she says. So far, $670,000 has been raised toward the total $1.2 million needed to complete all of the tanks by 2012.

The center has until Sept. 30 to raise the matching funds.
