Bohenko comes to Saco as an experienced city manager having served in three New England communities.

He served his longest tenure with the Portsmouth, N.H., where he spent 23 years.

“I believe that Saco has many synergies with Portsmouth, including excellent municipal services, a strong financial position, access to the beautiful coastline, a great place to work, own a business and experience a high quality of life," said Bohenko.

“Maintaining a stable tax base is a primary focus as we continue to provide excellent city services, and I look forward to working with city staff to grow the tax base and ease the tax burden for all businesses and residents,” he added.

Bohenko received his master of business administration degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. He also received his bachelor's in public administration from Bentley University in Waltham, Mass.

Bohenko was selected after a competitive recruiting and hiring process conducted by HR Maine Consulting with 29 applicants.

Bohenko, who was given a three-year contract, will be paid $150,000 annually. The city council also waived the residency requirement, as authorized under the city charter.

Saco has a population of 20,669.
