Solar project, others receive MTI grants

A solar company based in Rockland will receive a nearly $600,000 grant to build a solar panel manufacturing plant.

Ascendant Energy has received a $575,000 grant from the Maine Technology Institute that will help fund a $5.8 million manufacturing facility that would employ 39 people, according to a press release from the institute. The Rockland City Council also recently voted unanimously to place the proposed site of the plant, the former Lewis Marine building,in a Pine Tree Zone, according to VillageSoup. MTI yesterday announced $25 million in technology grants to Maine organizations. See the full list here.

In related news, the city council also approved giving Pine Tree Zone status to parcels adjacent to Rockland Marine to help that company expand its business to accommodate larger vessels, which will add eight jobs.
