State offers buyout to 800 workers

State workers are being enticed with a new retirement program that offers a $10,000 payment to leave state service.

About 800 workers are eligible for the plan, which is expected to save $5.3 million over two years by providing incentives for state workers to retire, Ryan Low, commissioner of the Department of Administrative and Financial Services, told the Kennebec Journal.

The program is open only to those who will have reached normal retirement age by July 1 and have at least 10 years of state service. Low, who estimates at least 200 workers will take advantage of the offer, said the governor felt strongly that a retirement incentive was preferable to layoffs.
