State will charge Plum Creek for security costs

The state will charge Plum Creek Timber Company for supplying at least a dozen police officers to watch over recent public hearings on the company's controversial plan to develop the Moosehead Lake region.

The Seattle-based company says it does not object to the charge, which the Associated Press reported will cost the company tens of thousands of dollars. Plum Creek also hired its own private security agents for hearings recently held in Portland, Greenville and Augusta. The final hearing is scheduled for Jan. 19 in Greenville. No protests or vandalism occured at the first three hearings.

For the past two years, Plum Creek has hired security teams to watch over employees' homes and offices since the company's property was hit by vandals in 2005, according to the AP.
