Train could raise $31.5M with state's help

Railway officials say if Maine commits to giving $8 million per year to cover the Downeaster's federal subsidy, they will be able to raise $31.5 million to extend train service from Portland to Brunswick.

The Downeaster's federal subsidy, which now generously pads the train's annual $13 million operating budget, is set to expire in 2009.

Patricia Quinn, executive director of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, told the Portland Press Herald that with the state's financial support, the authority could obtain a revenue bond or a low-interest loan through the Federal Railroad Administration for upgrades on the 29.5 miles of track between Portland and Brunswick. And construction could begin in 2008, she said.
