Store's Obama sign sparks controversy

A general store in Standish has made national news and sparked intense debate after its owner posted a sign asking patrons to bet on when someone would try to assassinate President-elect Barack Obama.

The Standish Town Council yesterday condemned the sign, which was first spotted at the Oak Hill General Store last week by an Associated Press reporter. Councilors voted 6-0 in favor of a resolve denouncing the sign, which asks customers to place a $1 bet on the date of Obama's assassination, according to the Portland Press Herald. The sign has since been taken down.

But some of the 80 people who attended the public meeting spoke in defense of the store's owner, Steve Collins, saying the sign was a joke in poor taste blown out of proportion. State legislators have also drafted a resolution to denounce the sign and other forms of racism, according to Current Publishing.

The store has been closed this week and Collins did not attend yesterday's meeting in Standish, according to Current Publishing.
