Bath Iron Works is delaying delivery of the first two Zumwalt-class destroyers to the Navy by more than a year because of problems in integrating and testing new technology in the three-ship class of Navy destroyers.
“We’re working on a unique ship class that encompasses a lot of leading-edge technology in ways it hasn’t been used before,” BIW spokesman Matt Wickenheiser told the Bangor Daily News today. “We always knew the really hard work would come as we got to the test and activation phase.”
Citing a report in Reuters, the newspaper reported that the first-in-class DDG 1000, the future USS Zumwalt, is now scheduled for delivery to the Navy in November 2015 and that delivery of the second “stealth” destroyer, the future USS Michael Monsoor, has been pushed back to November 2016, nearly a year after its expected due date of December 2015. The third ship, the future USS Lyndon B. Johnson, remains on schedule for delivery in December 2018, the newspaper reported.
