Turnpike tolls to increase Feb. 1

Drivers on the Maine Turnpike can expect to throw a few more coins into the toll booth basket come Feb. 1.

The Maine Turnpike Authority's directors on Tuesday officially approved a toll increase, a year ahead of schedule, to raise $20 million per year for road and bridge repairs, the Portland Press Herald reported. The schedule change was first announced in October. The fee changes are structured to minimize increases for frequent drivers who use the electronic E-ZPass. Out-of-state drivers and those who use cash will pay more. The cash toll for the entire 106-mile length of the highway will be $5, a rate of 4.7 cents per mile. The authority's executive director, Paul Violette, said a drop in traffic due to high summer fuel costs and escalating highway maintenance expenses necessitated the increase, the paper reported.
