Two businesses eye BNAS

Two area businesses are racing against the clock to move into vacant facilities within Brunswick Naval Air Station.

Great Island Boat Yard in Harpswell wants to use 8,000 square feet of the empty Hangar 6 for winter storage and maintenance of boats, while New England Tent and Awning in Brunswick wants 7,000 square feet in a former storage depot to accommodate its expanding business, according to The Times Record. Subcommittees of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, which is charged with overseeing civilian reuse of the base, have approved leases for both businesses at rates of $2.50 per square foot. Both owners say they need to move before winter sets in, but MRRA doesn't officially acquire the hangar facility until late November and the rest of the base property until next June.

MRRA officials are working with the Navy to accommodate the businesses' relocations.
