The University of Maine and Tyler Technologies are launching an extended partnership to get students involved in STEM-related careers and education opportunities.

The Orono school and the Texas company, which has a large presence in Maine, have worked together on other projects since 2021. The new Pathways to Careers initiative aims to increase the accessibility and quality of career-related experiences for students throughout the University of Maine System.

“Fostering meaningful experiences that empower our students and set them up for success in the professional realm stands as a cornerstone of our mission at the University of Maine,” said Joan Ferrini-Mundy, UMaine president and vice chancellor for research and innovation, in a news release.

“Our dedication to research and education creates opportunities for students to navigate diverse career paths,” she continued. “Collaborations with partners like Tyler Technologies are important in advancing our shared commitment to preparing students for the workforce and beyond.”

Tyler Technologies will continue to sponsor tours of the university's campus for middle and high school students. These tours allow students to learn more about UMaine's computing and engineering programs and research. The tech company also supports early college courses in innovation, allowing students to earn high school and college credit.

The university will also continue to participate in the tech company’s Maine App Challenge, where middle and high school students develop their own programs after completing workshops on brainstorming, customer discovery, prototyping, testing and promotion. The App Challenge is offered in collaboration with the Foster Center for Innovation at UMaine.

Since its inception in 2015, the Maine App Challenge has gifted more than $90,000 in 529 college savings plans to Maine students.

Tyler Technologies (NYSE: TYL), based in Plano, Texas, provides integrated software and technology services for the public sector. The company employs about 1,000 people at Maine offices in Bangor, Falmouth and Yarmouth.

The partnership was celebrated on Monday during an event at Tyler's site in Yarmouth.

“This collaboration is a testament to our shared commitment to empowering students and preparing them for success in secondary education and their future careers,” said Chris Webster, president of Tyler’s ERP and civic division.

“By increasing access to and quality of career-related experiences, we are helping to develop talent in the state and create opportunities for students to pursue exciting STEM careers in Maine.”
