After an extensive national search for its next leader, United Way of Southern Maine has found a successor to Liz Cotter Schlax from within its own ranks.

Dan Coyne will take the helm as president and CEO of the Portland-based nonprofit on March 3, while Cotter Schlax will stay on through the end of this month to ensure a smooth transition.

Cotter Schlax, honored as a Mainebiz Woman to Watch in 2019, has led the organization for a decade. She announced her resignation last June. She joins a growing wave of Maine women business and nonprofit leaders pressing pause on their careers to reset and recharge as detailed in a recent cover story.

Coyne, who joined United Way of Southern Maine in 2012, currently serves as the organization's chief impact and governance officer.

His previous experience includes working as legislative director from the Maine Center for Economic Policy and as director of economic development and special projects for a former Democratic Congressman, Tom Allen, his LInkedIn profile shows.

Under Coyne’s leadership, United Way of Southern Maine said it will continue to focus on driving relevant and responsive solutions to address our community's most pressing challenges, fostering cross-sector collaboration and maximizing impact across southern Maine.

“I am humbled and thrilled to continue building on the 96-year legacy of addressing our community’s most urgent needs, with a clear vision of future growth,” Coyne said. “With deep partnerships and our incredible team of staff and volunteers, we are well-positioned to continue to innovate and build a stronger, more thriving future for southern Maine.”

The South Portland native is an alumnus of Bowdoin College and the University of Maine School of Law. He was hired for the United Way leadership role following a national search conducted by ProSearch, which had interviewed 150 applicants.
