The United Way of Southern Maine has promoted three executives into newly created C-suite positions.
“The introduction of the new C-suite positions reflects who we are as an organization now,” said Todd Cesca, United Way of Southern Maine board chair and partner at Charter Oak Capital Management. “Strong leadership in these pivotal roles will help drive our strategy as we welcome a new CEO in the next year.”
Dan Coyne has been named the organization’s first chief impact and governance officer. He has held various roles with United Way since 2012.
Most recently, he was senior vice president of impact and governance, overseeing community impact efforts related to youth opportunity, financial security, healthy communities and community resiliency. In his new role, he will retain his previous responsibilities and responsibilities related to organizational risk.
Prior to joining United Way, Coyne worked in the public and nonprofit sectors. The South Portland native is a graduate of Bowdoin College and the University of Maine School of Law. Coyne serves on the Southern Maine Community College Foundation Board and the Maine Community Foundation’s Cumberland County Grants Committee.
Kristin Chase Duffy has been named to the newly created position of chief operating and communications officer.
She joined the United Way of Southern Maine in 2013 and most recently was senior vice president of technology and communications.
In her new role, Duffy will oversee technology, communications, financial and operational management, and strategic planning.
With almost three decades of experience, Duffy’s career began in marketing and communication roles at PTC and KANA Software. She later became involved with nonprofits, including the Maine Women's Fund and Women Standing Together.
The Portland resident and Brewer native received her bachelor’s degree and MBA from Bentley University.
Cameron Peden has been named the United Way of Southern Maine's first chief people and development officer.
In this role, Peden will continue to lead the resource development and human resources departments and will be responsible for overall organizational equity work.
Before joining United Way in 2022, Peden was the human resources, compliance and marketing director at BCU Electric in Ashland, Ohio.
Peden is a graduate of Muskingum University and holds a master's degree in public administration from Cleveland State University. He is a board member at the Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine.
“Dan, Kristin, and Cam are experienced United Way leaders and by taking on these elevated roles, they are positioning our organization to better deliver measurable results for our community,” said Liz Cotter Schlax, president and CEO of the United Way of Southern Maine.
“I’m grateful for the board’s acknowledgement for their exceptional leadership.”
Cotter Schlax recently announced that she will step down in January 2025, after a decade at the helm.
She was honored as a Mainebiz Woman to Watch in 2019.
