Unitil wraps up meter upgrades

A natural gas utility in southern and central Maine has finished a $1.9 million project to install automated meter reading devices.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission yesterday approved an agreement between the Office of the Public Advocate and Unitil to recognize the company's completion of the mandated project, according to a press release from the PUC. Customer billing problems led the PUC in 2008 to order Unitil to install and partially fund the automated meter reading technology by Jan. 1, 2010. Unitil was able to complete the project by Nov. 1.

The agreement approved yesterday also established new requirements and timelines for reading meters and resolving billing disputes.
