USPS to slow First Class mail service for some

A nationwide change will lead to slower First Class mail service in Maine as of July 1, according to the U.S. Postal Service. First Class mail will now take two to three days to reach all parts of the state, compared with current one-day service.

Maine USPS spokesman Tom Rizzo attributed the slower delivery times to USPS budget problems and a drop in mail use, according to the Sun Journal. Certain zip codes in Maine will still see one-day service: those beginning with 039, 041, 042, 043 and 045. However, service will take two to three days in zip codes beginning with 044, 046, 047 and 049. USPS has met with some of its largest mailers to explain the changes, according to Rizzo, and companies do have the option of bringing their mail directly to one of its distribution centers in Hampden and Scarborough.

The postal service has announced a number of changes to address an expected $14 billion deficit this year, though it's scaled back some of its more controversial proposals. After initially planning to close more than 3,500 rural post offices, USPS in May said it would keep them open, but with shortened hours. Hours will be affected at 13,000 offices nationwide, including 244 in Maine. USPS also backed off a plan to shutter processing at the Hampden facility, at least for another two years.
