Cianbro Corp. Chairman and CEO Peter Vigue on Thursday spoke to forest industry leaders in Bangor, hoping to gain allies in his push to build a private east-west toll road across the northern portion of the state.
Joel Swanton, northeast regional manager for the Forest Resources Association, told the Bangor Daily News that Vigue spoke to the group because many of the association members had questions about Vigue's highway proposal and its impact on the forest industry.
Vigue's plan calls for a privately financed, 220-mile road built on private rights-of-way, from Calais to Coburn Gore.
The BDN reported that the association members were receptive to the toll-road proposal as Vigue told members that people in the state's forest resources industry could be important allies in bringing the project to fruition.
Outside of the talk, protesters from the group Friends of Piscataquis Valley voiced their opposition to what protester Sidney Mitchell called a "four-lane trucking route from Canada to Canada," in an interview with the BDN. "Just that physical abomination is going to wipe out our entire area. Southern Piscataquis [County], northern Penobscot [County], all those highly populated rural areas will be destroyed by this," Mitchell said.
