Vitelli holds Senate District 19 seat for Democrats

Eloise Vitelli, a Democrat from Arrowsic, beat out Republican Paula Benoit by a 3% margin Tuesday in a special election for Maine’s Senate District 19.

The Bangor Daily News reported Vitelli received 4,621 votes against Benoit’s 4,339. Green Independent candidate Daniel Stromgren took 357 votes in the race to fill the seat vacated by former Senate Majority Leader Seth Goodall, who resigned at the end of the last legislative session to become the New England regional administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Vitelli is expected to be sworn in Thursday, prior to a special session when lawmakers will vote on a $149.5 million bond package, which needs two-thirds approval to make it on a November ballot.

The win maintains the Democratic Party’s 19-15-1 majority in the Senate.
