U.S. Cellular has been awarded a $1.42 million grant to install seven new cell phone towers to provide expanded 4G LTE service to businesses and other customers in Washington County.
The Quoddy Tides reported that the seven sites include the towns of Eastport, Lubec, Cutler, Trescott, Alexander, Princeton and Whiting and will give customers speeds 10 times faster than previously available and comparable to high-speed Internet connections.
Installation of the cell towers is expected to take up to three years.
U.S. Cellular's $1.42 million bid is funded by the FCC USF Mobility Fund, which is intended to bring mobile broadband service to rural communities.
Judy East, executive director of the Washington County Council of Governments, told The Quoddy Tides the improved cell phone access is a "prerequisite for economic development … a basic requirement for all sectors, whether freight, tourism, fishing, you name it."
