WestPoint Home to close in Biddeford

WestPoint Home announced today that its mill in Biddeford is one of three facilities the company will shut down, leaving 121 people out of work in Maine.

Biddeford employees were notified of the closure today, and will be laid off between June 5 and 19, a company official told the Portland Press Herald. Weak demand for the mill’s sole product, a Vellux blanket, led to the closure. The plant is the last operating textile mill in Biddeford, and is central to developers’ hopes to convert the city’s complex of old textile mills into housing and commercial space, the paper reported.

New York-based WestPoint Home, which changed its name from WestPoint Stevens after emerging from bankruptcy in 2005, also announced plans to close plants in Elkin, N.C, and Chipley, Fla. Its only remaining plant is in Greenville, Ala, according to the paper.
