WEX Inc. (NYSE: WEX), the Portland-based financial technology service provider, will expand its global C-suite with two newly created roles overseeing the company's global footprint. The company has offices in 14 countries and employs around 5,400 people in total.
Starting Jan. 3, Karen Stroup will serve as chief digital officer while Carlos Carriedo will be chief operating officer, international, overseeing WEX’s operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and Asia Pacific. Both will report directly to Melissa Smith, the company's chair and CEO.
“Looking ahead to 2022, Karen and Carlos will be instrumental in expanding our global footprint and optimizing digital solutions for customers around the world,” Smith said in a news release Wednesday.
"As seasoned innovation and international professionals, both executives will enhance our global competitive position by focusing on WEX’s strategic growth and international collaboration initiatives. I look forward to partnering with them as we continue to grow our business.”
As WEX's first chief digital officer, Stroup will be charged with furthering digital commerce and product development opportunities across the company. She was previously with multinational media conglomerate Thomson Reuters, where she served as chief digital officer since 2019.
Prior to her role at Thomson Reuters, Stroup served as senior vice president, product and innovation, at Capital One Financial Services and vice president, product management, at Intuit. She received an MBA degree from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and a bachelor's degree from University of Notre Dame.
As the new chief operating officer, international, for WEX, Carriedo will lead strategic growth internationally. Carriedo has more than two decades of experience leading global business growth through multinational innovation and digital transformation initiatives. Most recently, he worked at American Express as general manager of commercial services for Europe. He has also served as chairman of American Express Bank of Russia.
He received an MBA from Stanford University and an undergraduate degree from the Instituto Tecnólogico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Mexico.
The additions of Carriedo and Stroup are aligned with the reorganization of WEX’s executive leadership team, first announced in October.
WEX said the reorganization aims to provide customers with solutions that maximize efficiency as the company grows and streamlines integration of its extensive payments and technology platform.
In its latest quarterly earnings report released in October, WEX posted third-quarter results above market expectations and raised its full-year financial projections.
Shares have a current market value of $6.1 billion as of Wednesday's close. Shares have lost 32.8% in value over the past year.
