$4.1M in federal aid goes to 'backbone' of Maine's rural health care system

The Penobscot Community Health Center in Bangor has received $4.1 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to continue and expand care.

The flagship of the Penobscot Community Health Care network, the center at 1012 Union St. has provided care for patients since 1997. It offers primary health care, dental care, mental health and other medical services.

The funding was announced in a joint statement from U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Angus King, I-Maine, and U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine 2nd District.

“Community health centers are the backbone of Maine’s rural health care system.  As we combat the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, these medical providers are needed now more than ever,” Collins, King and Golden said.

“Penobscot Community Health Center has an essential role in improving the health and wellbeing of patients in communities throughout the region, focusing on promoting physical and emotional wellness, personal dignity, and a sense of belonging.  This funding will support their efforts to deliver quality health care services."

In 2019, Penobscot Community Health Care served more than 65,000 patients, 70% of whom were seniors or people with low incomes. The network is the second-largest of the 100 federally qualified health centers in New England, and has more than 750 employees including 196 providers. The PHCH annual budget is about $85 million.
