The Maine Winter Sports Center, a nonprofit ski area in Caribou, has been named a finalist for the International Ski Federation's SnowKidz award.
The center was one of eight finalists named worldwide and the only U.S. organization to be nominated for the new award, which recognizes organizations that introduce children to the sport of skiing, according to a press release from MWSC. The center launched its Healthy Hometowns program more than 10 years ago to help combat childhood obesity by bringing skiing programs to Maine communities and schools. More than 6,500 children in 100 communities participate in the program each year. As a finalist, MWSC receives 5,000 Swiss francs, or approximately $4,500. The winner of the award will be announced June 4 in Turkey and will receive $13,500.
MWSC, which has hosted the U.S. biathlon national championships and the U.S. cross country Junior Olympics, owns two cross country and biathlon ski facilities and operates two community-based alpine ski areas. The organization promotes its ski areas and events "as a sustainable development model for rural communities in Maine," President Andy Shepard said in the release.
