Wood pellet mfg. goes up in smoke

A wood pellets manufacturer in Corinth is temporarily shut down after a fire yesterday caused $500,000 in damages.

Corinth Wood Pellets Manufacturing LLC has operated its pellet-manufacturing plant since it opened in March 2007. It's not clear how many workers are employed by the company, but at the time the facility opened, it produced 140,000 tons of wood pellets a year and employed about a dozen workers, according to the Bangor Daily News. However, the company expected to ramp up production to 300,000 tons of pellets a year by the end of 2007 and employ 40, the paper said.

The fire started when a fan sucked in a flame from an exterior burner, igniting dust and insulation inside the building, the paper said.
