LURC: Plum Creek should shrink plan

The state agency that's evaluating Plum Creek Timber Co.'s development plans for the Moosehead Lake area yesterday said the plan needs to be scaled back.

In a 130-page document issued yesterday, the Land Use Regulation Commission's staff said Plum Creek's plan -- to protect 400,000 acres from development and rezone 20,000 acres to build nearly 1,000 house lots and two resorts -- needs to have fewer housing units and protect more land.

Plum Creek officials told the Portland Press Herald they weren't sure which changes they'd make, if any. Particular recommendations include removing nearly 3,000 acres from the 4,358-acre Lily Bay resort plan and adding the land to a conservation easement; and building only 55 housing units at the Long Pond development area, rather than 110.

The commission will consider the plan and the staff's recommendations, which are not binding, May 27-28 in Augusta.
