The Mainebiz Next List, presented annually since 2013, was originally designed to highlight the people who were changing Maine’s economy and who were on the rise. Some of them were on the young side, but not all. It was more about the energy and vision a person was bringing to a project. This year, Mainebiz presents seven leaders who are carving out new territory. Like a lot of businesspeople in the past 18 months, they’ve had their ups and downs. But how they responded is also a big part of why they’re being honored.

In November, Mainebiz asked, "Are you worried about how President-elect Trump's higher U.S. tariffs could affect your business?" Around 53% of respondents said they were.
As of Feb. 1, President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada and an additional 10% levy on goods from China. Energy imports from Canada, including oil, gas and electricity, are to be taxed at a lower, 10% rate.
Even with a 30-day pause on tariffs on Canada and Mexico, the plans are still looming. This week plans to enact tariffs on aluminum and steel are expected to go into effect.
