A national nonprofit's list of the 13 safest rural hospitals in the country includes five Maine hospitals.
The Leapfrog Group, a Maryland-based coalition of public and private purchasers of health coverage, conducts its annual survey based on measures that aim to identify hospitals that have reduced medical errors.
This year's survey includes the following rural Maine hospitals:
Last year, the organization's listing of just three of the nation's top rural hospitals included Maine's Miles Memorial Hospital and Sebasticook Valley Hospital.
This year, Maine also had two hospitals — Central Maine Medical Center and Pen Bay Medical Center — named in the organization's listing of the nation's 67 top urban hospitals, a group that includes Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and Boston Medical Center.
According to a press release, the ratings are based on three areas of hospital care, including: how patients fare, resources used to care for patients and good management practices.
