Anthem ranks Maine 11th healthiest

A new public health program by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has named Maine the 11th healthiest state in the nation.

The ranking is part of Anthem's new State Health Index program, which uses data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assess individual state's health based on 23 factors, according to a press release. Maine also ranked 11th for its adult physical activity levels. The state's lowest ranking was for number of adult immunizations for flu and pneumonia, at 19th and 35th, respectively.

Anthem will use the results of the state health index to develop programs to address specific areas that need improving, including immunization rates, availability of early prenatal care, and rates of diabetes and heart disease, the release stated.
