Guv asks UMaine for climate change study

Governor John Baldacci has requested the University of Maine in Orono complete a Maine Climate Change Assessment to help policymakers make informed decisions.

Baldacci wants the report to identify climate scenarios Maine could face for the remainder of the 21st century, what the critical impacts and necessary adaptations will be and how to involve scientific debate in policy issues, according to today's press release. "As the state works to address climate change, it's critical that we have the best information available to guide our decision making," Baldacci said in the release.

Researchers at UMaine's Climate Change Institute will lead the study, which will be delivered to Baldacci in November 2008. "The climate of the 21st century will be quite different from that of the last century," UMaine professors George Jacobson and Ivan Fernandez said in the release. "We should not be dealing with climate change as an isolated issue while everything else remains business as usual."
