Bangor Hydro hires ex-cop to curb copper, meter thefts

Bangor Hydro is looking to stem a tide of electric meter thefts that one company official says is a result of people attempting to cheat the system.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the company hired former Maine State Police Lt. Dave Bowler three months ago as a security specialist in response to an increase in copper thefts in recent years and, more recently, electric meter thefts.

Company spokesman Bob Potts said the meter thieves are often attempting to get electricity for free by connecting stolen meters to their homes or disconnecting meters.
