Bath Iron Works has received two U.S. Navy contracts this week, amounting to $57 million.
The first contract is a $28.7 million job for fleet maintenance work on several Navy ships, according to a statement from U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, who serves on a House committee that determines funding levels for Navy programs.
The second contract, also $28.7 million, is for design and engineering work on the Littoral Combat Ship, a small ship that carries amphibious assault forces, equipment and helicopters in near-shore waters to work on missions, including anti-submarine warfare and mine-sweeping.
The Bangor Daily News reported that fleet maintenance work will be done in San Diego, while design and engineering work on the Littoral Combat Ship will happen in the Bath shipyard, Pittsfield, Mass., and Mobile, Ala.
Earlier this year, BIW christened the first of its next-generation warships, the $4 billion USS Zumwalt. It also received a $643 million contract in March for additional work on destroyers.
