BEP: Casino work can resume

A state environmental board has given Black Bear Entertainment the go-ahead to resume work at the site of its Oxford County casino resort after the developers proved they have the financial capacity to build the project.

The Board of Environmental Protection yesterday approved evidence from Black Bear that investors have the funds to complete the Route 26 casino, according to the Sun Journal. Last month, the BEP ordered the company to halt work at the site in response to a permit appeal from the Androscoggin River Alliance. Black Bear Community Development Director Scott Smith told the paper the company must still file paperwork in order to continue work, which will happen by Wednesday.

The river alliance appealed the Department of Environmental Protection's permit for the casino in April, also arguing the site does not have enough groundwater to meet the $165 million casino's needs. Black Bear has until September to provide more data to the BEP on the site's water supply.
