BIW avoids layoffs, gets early approval for expansion
Bath Iron Works has offered new jobs to 40 employees the shipyard previously said it would lay off today.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the 25 people working as insulators and 15 as pipe coverers have been offered other jobs at the Bath-based defense contractor, which employs approximately 5,700 people.
Separately, the shipyard received local planning board approval for a $32 million expansion that would include an 11-story, 51,315-square-foot outfitting hall adjacent to the shipyard’s Ultra Hall. The building would include two 200-ton bridge cranes that would allow installation of piping, ventilation, electrical consoles and other equipment into the vessels the shipyard builds for the U.S. Navy. In early August, the shipyard said it would seek a tax break from the city of Bath on the new building. The company says the addition will keep it competitive in bids for Navy contracts.
If the plan moves forward, the shipyard says construction would be complete in 2015.
