BIW wins $663M destroyer contract modification

The U.S. Navy has awarded Bath Iron Works a nearly $663 million contract modification for the next DDG 51-class destroyer.

BIW competitively bid to build the destroyer, known as DDG 116, and in September secured an option to build it pending appropriations from Congress, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. The total contract amount is $662,927,172. This contract modification represents only a portion of the more than $3 billion the Navy has awarded to BIW in the last 12 months, according to the release. The shipyard in September won a $680 million contract to build DDG 115.

BIW is currently building the first DDG 1000 destroyer, and earlier this month received a $2 billion contract for the next two. BIW is scheduled to deliver the last of the three DDG 1000 ships in February 2018.
