Bowdoin College eyes largest solar array in Maine

Bowdoin College officials have proposed building a 1.3-megawatt solar system on the college’s campus and at Brunswick Landing, which the college said could offset up to 8% of its annual electricity usage.

In a daily college blog, officials announced the proposed multi-million dollar solar array would be built in collaboration with the San Mateo, Calif.-based SolarCity Corp., which would finance, build, own and maintain the solar installation from which the college would buy power.

The project would install about 600 kilowatts of solar capacity on top of two campus buildings and another 700 kilowatts on ground-mounted panels on land the college recently acquired at Brunswick Landing, the former Brunswick Naval Air Station.

The project still requires local, state and federal approval.
